Junior Controller - New York

New York City based startup Scratch Music Group is currently seeking a Junior Controller to help manage and grow its accounting and finance operations. The company, originally founded in 2002, is VC backed and is eager to focus on profitability. The position will report to and work closely with the VP of Finance, and will be responsible for owning many key functions within the finance group.

You are expected to be the #2, right-hand-person to the head of the finance group, relied upon to make an immediate impact. You will dive into the current systems, master them, and improve them. You will have a constant view towards process efficiencies and creative problem solving. Every week is different, systems will have hiccups, and you will be thrown things you’ve never done before.  It’s a challenge, but you love challenges.

  • Full ownership of monthly close process, including proper transaction coding, journal entries, and maintenance of balance sheet schedules
  • Preparation of consolidated financial statements from QuickBooks, as well as adaptation to external divisional revenue and full P&L analysis package in Excel
  • Assisting in weekly and monthly cash flow planning
  • Own all aspects of accounts payable and cash disbursements process
  • Administration of core HR functions such as payroll, benefits, and employee onboarding
  • Monitoring of accounts receivable, including follow-up on past-due customers
  • Help lead the implementation of best practices in the finance team to scale our business, gain new insights, or reduce time spends
  • Participation in special projects, ERP implementation, system enhancements or ad hoc analyses as assigned


This is a position for someone coming from an accounting background, who has outstanding organizational skills, strong work ethic, and willingness to do hands on work to get the job done.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting with CPA license strongly preferred
  • 3-5 years of related accounting experience
  • 2+ years in public, plus 1-2 years in a nimble, start-up type environment ideal
  • Proven ability to take on responsibility and be a key member of a small team
  • Strong Excel skills and comfort working in and learning new accounting software
  • Ability to work under time pressure, prioritize workload, and meet deadlines
  • Proven ability to succeed in a fast-paced and constantly changing environment

The Scratch Events division leverages its assets, global reach, and the power of the DJ to create authentic and immersive programs for Fortune 1000 brands. Over the course of its operating history, Scratch Events has worked with these brands to execute over 100,000 events, and entertained over 35 million people in over 25 countries worldwide.


Scratch is looking for an experienced Sales Manager who on a daily basis will pitch brands across a number of verticals to sell them a range of DJ services from single bookings to large-scale national event series. This highly motivated person will have the right mix of B2C sales expertise, analytic skills to understand how to develop and manage a pipeline along with the strategic ability to help drive market share. This position is designed for a sales hunter. Someone who has a knack and passion to knock down doors and a strong ability to pitch effectively once in.


  • Work with management to develop, deploy and oversee a comprehensive sales outreach strategy
  • Engage new accounts through a mix of emails, cold calls, conferences and networking
  • Work inside the company’s CRM to drive and maintain the sales pipeline from lead to close
  • Pitch, negotiate and close sales leads to all accounts in the pipeline
  • Set, meet and exceed sales conversion, meeting goals, margin goals and revenue objectives
  • Ability to sell into executive-level client personnel
  • Own all sales conversion metrics and monthly goals, including KPI and dashboard  reporting
  • Stay up to date on latest industry trends to identify new targets and tweaks in strategic direction
  • Ability to create, review and edit sales collateral


  • 3+ years sales experience (preferably for an event, PR, media company or agency)
  • Proven experience and passion to be a sales hunter
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to identify and prioritize sales opportunities
