BM 202 is for continuing students and those who have prior knowledge of music production and a basic understanding of both Live and Reason software.  This class will cover the advanced functions of the Live and Reason software, and further expand your knowledge of theory and song arrangement.

SKILLS COVERED:

Effects: Effects are an essential part of production, used to manipulate sounds in many ways. We will revisit real time based processers and show you new ones and different ways to use them. More importantly we will explain dynamics processors, such as compressors and equalizers. Dynamics processors will allow you to sculpt sounds so you have more control of your mix.
Reason: Reason is an industry standard for production software; it has been relied on for years and is heard in many pieces of modern production. Few pieces of software or hardware can match the power and stability of reason. Reason is basically an all-inclusive studio in one piece of software consisting of multiple dynamic and real time effects processors, synthesizers, and samplers. Reason contains thousands of sounds to use and manipulate to create your own user versions. This means unlimited new sounds! In this class we will get you familiar with all the devices reason has to offer.
Sound Synthesis: Synthetic sounds are a staple of modern production and sound design, synthesis is complex and can be confusing for newcomers. Using Reason synthesizers we will provide you with a basic understanding of certain synthesis aspects such as filters, LFOs and envelopes. We will also show you how to make some essential sounds from the ground up.
ReWire: When using production software you might rely on more that one application, this is perfectly normal and is preferred by most. A producer might use one host application and many plug-ins that run inside that host. We have found Live and Reason to be a nearly unstoppable combination. What makes the two programs together even more perfect is that they both utilize the function rewire. You will learn to master rewire and utilize these two powerhouses in unison for unparalleled results and ease of use.
Advanced Live Techniques: Finally, you will become more fluent in Live. As you already know Live is one of the most powerful and popular host/production applications. Uncover more complex tools such as automation and hone your warping skills. Automation will allow you to manipulate multiple parameters simultaneously for ease of use and conservation of CPU power. We will go into the new functions of Ableton such as the groove pool and mastering effects.

  • Equipment: All equipment is provided and includes Mac Computers, Ableton Live software, MIDI keyboards, and audio interfaces. The only thing you need to bring to class is yourself.
  • Weekly Make-up/Review: Miss a class? Not a problem. Each week a portion of class is dedicated to reviewing the material from the previous week. If you happen to miss a class, we’ll be sure to keep you up to speed.

FULL OVERVIEW:

BM 202 meets once a week (120 minutes per day) for six weeks.

Now that you understand the basics enroll in BM 202, where you will further expand your production knowledge. Learning to become a great and efficient producer requires that you have an in depth understanding of the software you are using. Knowing “just what you need to get by. ” doesn’t cut it and can stifle your creativity when you eventually run into a brick wall. The objective is to get your ideas out fast and efficiently and in BM 202 well show you how.

This class will cover many of the advanced capabilities of Ableton Live and delve into the Reason software. Reason will allow you to unlock a sonic arsenal that is ever expanding. We will show you how to use Live and Reason simultaneously for a simple and streamlined workflow that will multiply your production capabilities.
