Born, raised, and still representing the Boogie Down Bronx, Jazzy Joyce has been hard at work on the wheels of steel since the early ‘80s. At the early age of twelve, she fell in love with DJing after hanging out with her cousin in the Forest Projects and seeing him make “magic” with is turntables. Knowing this was her calling, she got herself a pair of Techs, started digging for records, and practiced until her skills were tight.
In the early ’80s, female DJs were almost nonexistent and usually overshadowed by their male counterparts. However, this fact didn’t slow Jazzy down; it only motivated her more. She won her first battle competition in 1983 (against DJ Wanda Dee) and recorded her first hit single (“Play That Beat”) with Tommy Boy records in 1984. In 1987 she even battled against Cash Money.
In addition to numerous tours and club residencies, Jazzy DJ’d the historic HBO special Russell Simmons Presents “Bad Girls of Def Comedy Jam”, hosted MTV’s “Sister for Hip-Hop and Soul Tour”, and most recently performed on VH-1′s Hip Hop Honors. She even holds down her own weekly radio show on Hot 97. Jazzy is a knowledgeable and respected voice in the DJ community, and her efforts have helped pave the way for today’s female DJs.
