Class #1: History, Equipment and Basics
Students will be introduced to the world of the DJ, first through
a brief overview of its history and roots, and then by covering and
defining the basics of the equipment and turntable set up. Additionally,
students will learn basic hand to record and hand to fader technique.
Class #2: Music Theory, Mixing and Blending
Before students can excel as DJ’s, they must first understand
the basic music theory behind the music they mix and blend. This class
will explore basic music theory and will then cover the fundamental
concepts of dropping on the “1” and phrasing.
Class #3: Club DJ’ing and BPM’s
Students will focus on the essential skill of beat matching, learning
about BPM’s and how to differentiate music genres based on beats
and tempo. Additionally, students will take an in depth look at the
world of the club DJ, covering everything you ever needed to know
about spinning at a club or similar venue.
Class #4: Mixtapes - Skills, Needs and Steps
Students will get to see firsthand how some of the best mixtape DJ’s
in this multi-billion dollar Industry make their tapes. After covering
the basics of how to make a mixtape, from selecting the music to actually
burning the disc, students will then continue to learn other techniques
and tricks to help their mixing and blending.
Class #5: Battle DJ’ing and Scratching
Not only will students get to see battle routines from a world class
DJ, but will also get to learn the battling basics as well from a
true master. This exciting and fast paced aspect of the industry brought
us the term "turntablism."
Class #6: Bringing the Skills Together
After learning the basics of how to mix, blend and scratch, the last
class will provide students with a chance to review the basic skills
and learn a few more. The class will wrap up with a DJ showcase, class
demonstrations and advice on next steps for DJ 151 or DJ 202.
