Now that you’ve completed or tested out of DJ 101, it’s time to explore the fascinating world of turntablism. S202 covers all the intermediate principles of turntablism –stabs, chirps, flares, and intricate scratch patterns. This course will give you everything needed to set yourself a part from other DJs, giving you the skills to showcase your creativity by incorporating various tricks and techniques into your live performance sets..
- The following scratches: stab, chirp, flare, transform, and other intricate scratch patterns.
- How to trick mix and utilize scratching patterns when fading out of song
- Basic turntablism techniques like looping and drumming.
Completion of the DJ 101 course at Scratch or an instructor evaluation that shows you understand the basic fundamentals of mixing.
If you have your own equipment we encourage you to bring it (especially your headphones), but if not you just need yourself and your desire to learn.
If I am more interested in mixing and party rocking should I still take this class?
Yes! At some point every DJ should be able to mix and should be able to seamlessly blend from one song to the next, but the DJ that will stand out is the DJ that incorporates other techniques and creativity. Plus scratching helps to build hand to record control, timing, and rhythm (all skills that are valuable for mixing). Scratching is not just for turntablists or battle DJs, it is for any DJ that is interested in being well rounded in the art form.
Are records and music provided for you in class?
Students are encouraged to bring their own music (Analog or digital) so that they can be creative with music they like and know. We also have a music library that students can use to find music for their sets if they choose to.
Do I have to have knowledge of Digital DJing programs in order to take S202?
No, in S202 we use regular scratch sentences to help students gain muscle memory and a better understanding of the scratch techniques or patterns they are taught in class.Digital platforms are welcomed if the student would like to bring theirs in but it is not necessary.
I am an experienced DJ and I am familiar with certain scratches but not all. I am also unsure of the names of these scratches. Will the S202 still be valuable to me with my experience?
Yes, the S202 is for DJs of all levels. We have DJs with no scratching background and DJs that have experience with battling and turntablism. The S202 is great to help an experienced DJ take some of the rust off their scratching skills. In S202 you will learn the name, the history, when and where to use it, and the technique behind many scratches you may or may not be familiar with. If by chance you are too advance for the S202 we do offer the S303 course which introduces juggling and the creation of a battle routine.
